Salt Lake City, Utah

Officiant & Ceremony

In Salt Lake City: This annex lists two officiant and ceremony businesses for the region. The three entries labeled beneath them are congregations, not services, and they are there because the commercial category here is genuinely thin: many couples marry with clergy from their own congregation or with someone close to them, which keeps the paid market small. Utah's own rule is unusual and worth knowing exactly. A license may only be used within the state, and it counts as used in the state if the officiant is physically present in Utah at the time of solemnization, which makes the officiant the only person the statute puts inside Utah (Utah Code 81-2-302). Utah County will also perform a ceremony by remote appearance for $35.00, during business hours and on a license it issued, with both parties and both witnesses on a live video feed. The statute requires the county to warn, and the officiant to repeat that warning verbatim, that an online marriage solemnized here may be invalid in the country where the parties live. Take it seriously. You need at least two witnesses 18 or older, Salt Lake County does not supply them, and a Utah County officiant must complete its online submission within 30 days of the ceremony.

Churches and congregations

These are places of worship rather than for-hire officiants. Many will marry members of their own congregation, or couples willing to join and complete a marriage preparation course, and some will not marry non-members at all. Several also price the building, the clergy and the musician separately. Ask early what they require of you — policy varies widely between denominations, and between individual congregations of the same denomination.
