Dallas & Fort Worth, Texas

Officiant & Ceremony

In Dallas & Fort Worth: Texas will not let you marry on the day you collect the license: the ceremony may not take place during the 72-hour period immediately following issuance, and that clock runs from issuance, not from your application. The route most couples can actually use is the eight-hour Twogether in Texas premarital course, with the original signed and dated certificate presented with your application and dated not more than one year before you file it. It does two things by two separate mechanisms, and the second carries a trap: it lifts the 72-hour wait for anyone, but it takes $60 off the license fee only if you can also prove Texas residency. A couple flying in for a ranch wedding west of Fort Worth gets the wait waived and still pays full price. Texas has no self-solemnization - you cannot marry yourselves, and only clergy, an authorized officer of a religious organization, or a current, former or retired judge may conduct the ceremony. This annex found one officiant service in the region; the labeled entries beneath it are congregations, not officiant businesses. Witnesses are not required, nothing is filed in advance, and whoever signs must return the license to the issuing clerk within 30 days.

Churches and congregations

These are places of worship rather than for-hire officiants. Many will marry members of their own congregation, or couples willing to join and complete a marriage preparation course, and some will not marry non-members at all. Several also price the building, the clergy and the musician separately. Ask early what they require of you — policy varies widely between denominations, and between individual congregations of the same denomination.
