Officiant & Ceremony

In Austin: The list holds two service vendors in this category -- that is the honest number, not a curated sample, and it means the three labeled alternatives below the listing are where most couples will actually find someone. Those alternatives point at clergy directories and church congregations, which is how a good share of couples marrying here find their officiant. Texas Family Code 2.202 restricts who may legally officiate to ordained or licensed clergy, current or retired federal and state judges, Texas magistrates, and specific statutory officials -- self-uniting ceremonies are not recognized here. A friend ordained online can officiate if that ordination meets the standard the statute expects of clergy; the practical answer is to describe the situation to the county clerk before the ceremony rather than after. The wrong assumption discovered a week out is not a small problem.

Churches and congregations

These are places of worship rather than for-hire officiants. Many will marry members of their own congregation, or couples willing to join and complete a marriage preparation course, and some will not marry non-members at all. Several also price the building, the clergy and the musician separately. Ask early what they require of you — policy varies widely between denominations, and between individual congregations of the same denomination.
