New York City, New York

Officiant & Ceremony

In New York City: Two officiant and ceremony services are listed, and below them sits a clearly labeled block of three churches and congregations, which are not officiant businesses but are where much of this work is actually booked here. Then the rule specific to this city and to nowhere else in the state: whoever performs your ceremony inside New York City limits must be registered with the Office of the City Clerk. Registration costs $15, the signature must be notarized, and the packet goes by mail to the Manhattan office at 141 Worth Street. Allow weeks rather than days, and start it early. A one-day officiant license does exist in New York under DRL 11-d, at a clerk's fee of $25, with no residency requirement and authority to solemnize anywhere in the state. But if your marriage license was issued in New York City, that officiant must apply to the Manhattan office rather than the borough office that issued the license, and the application may only be submitted after you already hold the license. Personal appearance is not required. The order is the trap: license first, then officiant.

Churches and congregations

These are places of worship rather than for-hire officiants. Many will marry members of their own congregation, or couples willing to join and complete a marriage preparation course, and some will not marry non-members at all. Several also price the building, the clergy and the musician separately. Ask early what they require of you — policy varies widely between denominations, and between individual congregations of the same denomination.
