The most important local fact is that this region spans two states with two different license clocks, and North Carolina just changed its own: effective October 2023, North Carolina eliminated its waiting period entirely, so a Mecklenburg County license is usable the moment it is issued and stays valid 60 days, first-come first-served, no appointment, for a flat $60.00 cash, credit or debit. South Carolina still runs the rule North Carolina just dropped -- a mandatory 24-hour wait between applying and receiving the license -- but grants a much longer validity window once issued, six months rather than 60 days, through the county Probate Court rather than a Register of Deeds. One more surprise worth knowing before you assume: North Carolina does not let a judge perform your ceremony. Authorized officiants there are magistrates, ordained ministers, and religious denominations that solemnize marriage without a named officiant at all, plus state- or federally-recognized tribes.

Churches and congregations

These are places of worship rather than for-hire officiants. Many will marry members of their own congregation, or couples willing to join and complete a marriage preparation course, and some will not marry non-members at all. Several also price the building, the clergy and the musician separately. Ask early what they require of you — policy varies widely between denominations, and between individual congregations of the same denomination.
