Kansas City, Missouri

Cake & Desserts

In Kansas City: Twelve bakers are listed, the largest group in Overland Park and the rest through Kansas City, Prairie Village and Liberty. Delivery is the local variable. A baker on the Kansas side may not deliver out to Excelsior Springs or Weston, or may price it properly, so settle the delivery radius and the fee at the tasting rather than after you have fallen for a design. Summer here is hot and humid enough to matter for buttercream, and a cake parked near a west-facing window in an old building will not hold. Ask where the cake will stand, whether the venue has anywhere cool to hold it until service, and who is responsible if it fails. Kansas City has a strong independent bakery scene, so a dessert spread is an easy local swap. Budget $4 to $11 per slice.
