Minneapolis–St Paul, Minnesota

Officiant & Ceremony

In Minneapolis–St Paul: This is a thin category here — four independent officiants serve the whole metro, plus one house of worship willing to marry couples from outside its own congregation — so if your date matters to you, lock this down early rather than assume options will still be open close to the day. The rule couples most often get wrong: an officiant must register as a civil marriage officiant with a Minnesota county before the ceremony, not after, and that county's name is printed on the certificate. One county's one-time filing fee for this is $45, and the signed certificate has to be returned within 5 days of the ceremony — a friend ordained online the week before still has to clear this step. Separately, the marriage license itself drops from $125 to $50 for couples who complete at least 12 hours of state-recognized premarital education, the single largest saving anywhere on this list.

Churches and congregations

These are places of worship rather than for-hire officiants. Many will marry members of their own congregation, or couples willing to join and complete a marriage preparation course, and some will not marry non-members at all. Several also price the building, the clergy and the musician separately. Ask early what they require of you — policy varies widely between denominations, and between individual congregations of the same denomination.
