Officiant & Ceremony

In Detroit: Be direct: zero standalone officiant or ceremony businesses met the standard in this region. What prints below the listings instead is a marked block of congregations, and for many couples here that is the right route anyway. The other route is the county clerk, and Michigan's rule is the opposite of what almost everyone assumes. This is a county-of-residence state: a Michigan resident applies at the clerk of the county where they live, and the license is then valid anywhere in Michigan — a Detroit couple marrying at an Oakland County venue still applies in Wayne. If you both live out of state, you apply in the county where the marriage will be performed and it is good only in that county. In Wayne, only one party need appear, but it must be the Wayne County resident; sending the out-of-state partner wastes the trip. Michigan requires two witnesses, each at least 18. Wayne also wants the officiant's name, title and a complete street address — a P.O. box is refused.

Churches and congregations

These are places of worship rather than for-hire officiants. Many will marry members of their own congregation, or couples willing to join and complete a marriage preparation course, and some will not marry non-members at all. Several also price the building, the clergy and the musician separately. Ask early what they require of you — policy varies widely between denominations, and between individual congregations of the same denomination.
