Baltimore & Annapolis, Maryland

Officiant & Ceremony

In Baltimore & Annapolis: Five are listed, so the category is thin. The paperwork is where this region catches people. A Maryland license is valid only in the county that issued it, and you apply to the circuit court clerk for the county where the ceremony will happen, not where you live. The city and the county sharing its name are separate jurisdictions: a license issued downtown is void in the suburbs, and the reverse. The fee gap is stark — eighty-five dollars in the city, cash only, against thirty-five in the county, for venues fifteen minutes apart. The waiting period is not the forty-eight hours everyone repeats: the license is not effective until six in the morning on the second calendar day after issue. Apply Friday afternoon and you may marry Sunday at six; apply Monday morning and you wait until Wednesday. A couple flying in on Friday for a Saturday wedding cannot legally marry. Only one of you need appear, with photo identification for both, and your officiant has five days to return the signed license. Whether an online ordination is recognized here is not settled by any published source we could find — confirm with the issuing clerk before you book. Budget $250 to $900.

Churches and congregations

These are places of worship rather than for-hire officiants. Many will marry members of their own congregation, or couples willing to join and complete a marriage preparation course, and some will not marry non-members at all. Several also price the building, the clergy and the musician separately. Ask early what they require of you — policy varies widely between denominations, and between individual congregations of the same denomination.
