In Boston: The structural fact catches every couple from out of state: licenses here are issued by city and town clerks, not by counties. There are 351 of them and each sets its own fee, so there is no such thing as a county marriage license in this state. What rescues it is that the license is valid anywhere in Massachusetts, so you may file wherever is convenient and marry somewhere else entirely. The timing is the trap. The license is not valid for 3 days after it is issued, and it expires 60 days from the date the marriage intention is filed and signed, which is narrow at both ends: file too early and it lapses, file too late and it is not yet valid. Both of you must apply together and in person, and each must be 18 or older. Boston's application fee is $50, and that figure is Boston's alone; every other city and town sets its own. Boston also requires an appointment booked in advance and is not taking walk-ins. This list runs short here because officiants remain a word-of-mouth market.

Churches and congregations

These are places of worship rather than for-hire officiants. Many will marry members of their own congregation, or couples willing to join and complete a marriage preparation course, and some will not marry non-members at all. Several also price the building, the clergy and the musician separately. Ask early what they require of you — policy varies widely between denominations, and between individual congregations of the same denomination.
