In Boston: Two things shape this category here. The first is that many of the region's most appealing venues are historic buildings in dense residential neighborhoods, which frequently carry a hard end time for amplified sound. Get that from the venue in writing, in hours, before you book a band rather than after. The second is power and access: a full band loading into a converted mill, a museum room or an upper floor of an old building needs circuits and a route in, and a beautiful old property may have neither in the form a band expects. Have them scout the site rather than describe it over the phone. Expect $1,800 to $8,000, and settle the run-of-show and a microphone that carries in a stone-walled room, where sound behaves differently than the rehearsal suggested.
