The Kentucky Derby (first Saturday in May) and Kentucky Oaks (the Friday prior) run through the Louisville wholesale market at the same moment couples in the metro are chasing spring wedding stems; if your date sits inside that window, order the palette early and expect substitutions on any bloom the meet is also buying. Summer here is genuinely hot and humid from June through August — a bridal bouquet built for a photograph in air conditioning wilts in the walk from a Louisville hotel lobby to a waterfront ceremony site if it is not hardened for heat. Ask the florist which stems hold in that heat and which need to arrive in a cooler. In-season, locally grown work is easier to find in April and September than in July, and the price difference is real.
