Washington, DC, District of Columbia

Venue

In Washington, DC: Your venue decides more here than taste: it decides which government issues your marriage license. The District's hotels, museums and rowhouse gardens; the Maryland side from Bethesda, Silver Spring and Rockville out to Bowie and Upper Marlboro; and the Loudoun wine-country belt running Leesburg to Middleburg, Purcellville, Waterford and Upperville are three separate legal worlds. A District license is valid only in the District. A Maryland license comes from the circuit court clerk of the county the ceremony sits in and is good in that county alone. A Virginia license works anywhere in the Commonwealth. A license bought for one side of a bridge is void on the other, so fix the address before you buy paper. The counters price it differently too: $45 in the District, the figure the Marriage Bureau publishes today; $55 in Montgomery County; $30 in Fairfax, Loudoun, Arlington and Alexandria; and $33.50 cash or $35.50 by card in Prince William. Twelve venues are listed, weighted toward the District and Leesburg, with College Park and McLean also represented.
