Officiant & Ceremony

In Denver: Colorado lets you marry yourselves, and that matters far more here than the length of the officiant shelf. C.R.S. 14-2-109(1) lists, among those who may solemnize a marriage, the parties to the marriage. No officiant, and no witnesses: Jefferson and Boulder counties both state plainly that witnesses are not required. What you take on instead is the paperwork. The statute requires that, where no individual acting alone solemnized the marriage, a party to the marriage complete the marriage certificate form and forward it to the county clerk and recorder within sixty-three days after the solemnization, and the state health department describes the same duty in plain terms. Miss it and the statute sets a late fee of at least $20, plus $5 a day, to a $50 maximum. One local exclusion is real: the Denver Clerk and Recorder states that self-solemnization is not allowed in a marriage by proxy. If you do want someone to hold the room, three officiant and ceremony businesses are listed here, and the congregations printed beneath them are labeled alternatives, not officiant businesses. Boulder County publishes that judges there perform ceremonies at no charge, and instructs couples to contact a judge or magistrate about availability and fees.

Churches and congregations

These are places of worship rather than for-hire officiants. Many will marry members of their own congregation, or couples willing to join and complete a marriage preparation course, and some will not marry non-members at all. Several also price the building, the clergy and the musician separately. Ask early what they require of you — policy varies widely between denominations, and between individual congregations of the same denomination.
