Tucson, Arizona

Officiant & Ceremony

In Tucson: Arizona makes the legal part unusually easy, and it is worth knowing before you plan anything else. There is no waiting period and no blood test, the license is valid for twelve months, and it may be used anywhere in the state — so there is no county-of-use trap and no scramble between collecting it and marrying. In Pima County it costs ninety-eight dollars. Seven offices issue it and four of them are outside downtown, in Oro Valley, Marana, Sahuarita, and Green Valley, so if you are staying out that way you need not drive in. Offices run Monday to Friday, eight to four thirty; check accepted payment methods and whether an appointment is required before you go. Two witnesses, each at least eighteen, must take part in the ceremony and sign the license. That is not optional, and couples routinely assume it is. The state keeps no officiant registry and requires no registration; authority to solemnize comes from a religious body's own rules rather than from the state, so if a friend intends to officiate on an online ordination, confirm it with the Clerk before you fix the hour.

Churches and congregations

These are places of worship rather than for-hire officiants. Many will marry members of their own congregation, or couples willing to join and complete a marriage preparation course, and some will not marry non-members at all. Several also price the building, the clergy and the musician separately. Ask early what they require of you — policy varies widely between denominations, and between individual congregations of the same denomination.
